I am running for re-election to the Palo Alto City Council and am asking for your support.
Four years ago I was concerned that the City was not maintaining the strengths of our community nor laying the groundwork for a healthy future. I called for revitalizing the City’s resources, refocusing our priorities, and rededicating ourselves to a grander vision of what Palo Alto can achieve.
We have made substantial progress in “taking care of business,” my theme as Mayor in 2008. Hiring a new City Manager was a priority. I am very pleased with the changes in enthusiasm and transparency that Jim Keene has brought since his arrival last September. A number of environmental steps have been taken; our Green Building Ordinance adopted in 2007 is a national model. In land use matters, we significantly reduced the development potential of large sites in South Palo Alto such as Summerwinds Nursery and the Palo Alto Bowl.
However, we face major issues. City revenues have taken a sizable hit requiring difficult but necessary financial choices. To reduce our labor costs will require thoughtful negotiations with our unions. We will need innovative action to avoid the serious negative impacts of an above-grade High Speed Rail. To preserve our neighborhoods and the quality of our schools, we must prevent over-development. And, as the negative effects of global warming become ever more ominous, we will have to continue our efforts to reduce Palo Alto’s carbon imprint.
I am confident my years of government experience will help lead us to solutions to these challenging problems and others yet to come. My focus will be on:
City Budget. Tough economic times provide an opportunity to make needed changes. A sound budget, one that looks long-term, will also provide for revitalizing our aging infrastructure.
Environment. We must continue to be an innovative environmental leader and work to attract new “green” companies that will improve our economy.
Quality of Life. For decades, our tree-lined streets, parks, open space, libraries, and excellent schools have drawn people to Palo Alto. Preserving those aspects of Palo Alto while integrating change is my goal.
There is more to be done and I want to continue in that work. Your support is needed. Please volunteer with my campaign, make a donation, and vote for me on November 3. Palo Alto needs the results we can achieve together.
