Larry Klein Top Priorities: September 21
· Solving our $10 million structural budget deficit.
· Preserving our Quality of Life -- potential threats: above-grade High Speed Rail and ABAG housing requirements
· Climate Change. As good as we have been, we need to do more.
Palo Alto Weekly profiles Larry Klein. October 2 – “Klein…began his first council term in 1981 and served as mayor twice (in 1984 and 1989) before terming out. He received the city's Tall Tree Award in 1994 as "Citizen of the Year" and returned to the council in 2005, citing his frustrations with the recently approved Arbor Real development on the former Rickey's Hyatt site. Last year, he completed his third term as mayor.
“Klein has been a major proponent of cutting employee compensation by 5 percent, a stance that has prompted the SEIU to send out anti-Klein fliers.”
Palo Alto Weekly recommends Klein for council. October 9 – “…an attorney whose many years of service on the council and multiple terms as mayor give him a unique perspective of the city, is much-needed as this young council finds its bearings. Klein has the historic perspective and temperament to advance our goal of stronger council oversight and accountability of city management, and he is not one to be mollified by bureaucratic explanations that skirt the real issues. He has a balanced approach to addressing the city's financial challenges, recognizing that both cuts to the budget and revenue increases will be necessary.”
Daily Post recommends Larry Klein. October 9 – “…Klein deserves credit for recognizing that former city manager Frank Benest had to go, and for bringing in Jim Keene to replace him. Klein uses his skills from years of legal practice to grill the city manager or city attorney when they make mistakes. Klein keeps the city employees on their toes, and that’s a good reason to keep him on Council as he seeks his fourth four-year term.”
Daily
News recommends Larry Klein. October 13 – “The lone incumbent
among the 14-candidate field, Larry Klein brings experience and a
no-nonsense approach to city governance.
“Given
Klein’s years of service, we trust him to guide what will be a relatively green
city council through the difficult task of solving a severe structural deficit,
among other challenges facing the city. And we appreciate that he realizes we
can’t get there through taxes alone, but need to consider spending cuts as
well.”
